Trioxsalen Topical Solution USP
Trioxsalen is a type of medicine that falls in the category of ‘photosensitizer’, and they are applied in the management of psoriasis and vitiligo. Psoriasis is a skin disease that presents as red, itchy, scaly plaques, commonly occurring on the elbows, knees, trunk, and scalp. Vitiligo is a disease in which the pigment cells of the skin (melanocytes) are lost. This leads to patches of color change in various parts of the body, such as skin, hair, and mucous membranes.
Trioxsalen has “trioxsalen,” a photosensitizing drug taken with UV-A light. In psoriasis, it decreases the excess production of skin cells. In vitiligo, it stimulates specific skin cells (melanocytes) and re-pigments the patches of white, discolored skin.
Trioxsalen is a group of drugs known as ‘photosensitizers’ taken in combination with UV-A light. The drug is applied in the treatment of psoriasis and vitiligo. In psoriasis, it decreases the excessive growth of skin cells. In vitiligo, it stimulates some of the skin cells (melanocytes) and re-pigments the patches of white, discolored skin. It is also employed in the treatment of seborrhea (a popular skin condition that produces a red, itching rash and white scales. When occurring on the scalp, it is referred to as dandruff) and ichthyosis (a genetic skin disease in which dead skin cells pile up in thick, dry scales on your skin’s surface).
Trioxsalen is a class of drugs known as psoralens (ultraviolet light-absorbing and ultraviolet-like acting photosensitizing agents). Methoxsalen changes the manner of skin cell acceptance of ultraviolet light A radiation, thereby removing the disease.

Trioxsalen in psoriasis, acts by lowering the excess growth of skin cells. In vitiligo, it stimulates specific skin cells (melanocytes) and facilitates re-pigmentation of the white, depigmented patches.
Trioxsalen must be administered cautiously to those patients suffering from allergy to sunlight, porphyria, cardiovascular disease, liver disorders, gastric disorders, cataracts, skin cancer, and lupus erythematosus disorder.
